What is an op-ed?

An op-ed is an opinion essay written with the intent of expressing your point of view on a topic.  It should be clear, concise, and include supporting evidence.  It does not represent the opinions of CAMO.  It may even contradict the opinions or positions of the CAMO organization. After all, you are expressing your opinion.  CAMO is providing this opportunity for citizens to express their views on Town of Mount Airy issues because we recognize the loss of the Mount Airy Messenger left us without a mechanism to share our thoughts to a larger audience beyond social media.  Op-eds will be posted to our News blog.

What are the submission requirements?

Submissions should be submitted using the form below.  They should be limited to 800 words or less and may not have been submitted to, posted to, or published by any other media.  They must include the author's full name.  Anonymous submissions or those written under a pseudonym will not be considered.  Submissions must also include the author's home address, email address, and telephone number.  We also ask that the author disclose any personal or financial interest in the subject being discussed.  CAMO will not accept submissions which delve into political arguments (liberal vs. conservative, for instance).  We feel strongly that the issues facing Mount Airy are nonpartisan.

How are op-eds selected?

CAMO will review each contribution for timeliness, relevance, and decorum.  If the submission offers a fresh perspective on an issue, it is more likely to be published.  Providing how your experience or background informs your opinion is a great way to show the uniqueness of your perspective.

When will I know if my op-ed will be published?
We are an all-volunteer organization and will do our best to review your submission promptly.  If you don't hear from us within two weeks of your submission, it is safe to assume we will not be publishing your op-ed.

Are op-eds edited?

CAMO will review your op-ed for clarity, grammar, and possibly precision of language.  We will also fact-check to the best of our ability.  If any changes are necessary, we will send it back to you for review before final publication.
